What is a Night Dive & Why is it Worth it
Are you visiting Hawaii’s Big Island and looking for something incredible and thrilling to try? Consider a night dive with Kona Ocean Adventures. The Kona Coast is one of the best places in the world for diving, even in the dark of night. These dives are enriching and exciting for any experienced diver looking for something new to do in Hawaii. This experience of a lifetime takes place 2-3 miles off the Kona Coast under the beautiful island moonlight.
What Makes a Night Dive Special?
While we offer many snorkeling and diving options at Kona Ocean Adventures, our Night Scuba Dive Tour is truly special. The Pelagic Night Dive is for experienced divers who consider themselves true adventurers. After taking off from the Honokohau Small Boat Harbor, our charter boat will take you and your group 2-3 miles off the Kona Coast to participate in the dive of a lifetime. Divers are tethered and float at about 50 feet in depth, watching and waiting to see what incredible marine life passes by. Microscopic zooplankton are attracted to the divers’ lights, which in turn attracts many amazing creatures such as jellyfish, squid, and more.
Safety Requirements for Divers
Due to the nature of our Pelagic Night Dive, there are certain safety requirements divers must follow. This is an advanced dive, so divers must have completed at least 50 logged dives and have dived with us within the last 6 months. Divers must be in good health, have no heart conditions, and be able to converse in English or request a diving translator. At Kona Ocean Adventures, safety is our top priority. If you cannot meet these safety requirements, we have other diving and snorkeling options for you to enjoy. First-time divers may enjoy our Discovery Scuba Tour. Are you a less experienced diver but still looking for a nighttime experience? Check out our Kona Night Manta Ray Snorkel Tour.
Marine Nightlife
The serene waters around Hawaii are teeming with incredible marine life. During the day, snorkelers and divers may encounter colorful fish such as Parrotfish and Reef Triggerfish. Under the water’s surface, there are also dolphins, whales, and even sea turtles! Night divers have the incredible opportunity and pleasure of seeing Hawaii’s marine life in a different light. At night, divers may encounter crustaceans such as lobsters and hermit crabs. The dark waters are also home to many marine mammals, such as dolphins and monk seals. Divers have also seen eels, octopuses, squid, and even manta rays! Our expert divers at Kona Ocean Adventures are knowledgeable about the marine life you may encounter during your adventure and can provide tons of information and insight into these amazing creatures that call Hawaii home.
Alternative Options
Our Sunset and Late Night Manta Snorkels are great alternatives to our popular Pelagic Night Dive. Manta Rays are incredible, gentle giants that glide and twist under the waters surface. Snorkelers float on the waves with the help of our custom paddleboards, complete with lights that attract phytoplankton, which in turn attract the beautiful manta rays.
