For many travelers, snorkeling in Kona is one of those bucket list experiences that can make a vacation truly special. At Kona Ocean Adventures, we love sharing the unique beauty of the Big Island through snorkeling and scuba diving trips for all ages. Kona’s waters are full of amazing wildlife, including manta rays, tropical fish, and playful dolphins. But the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, or Honu, is a true highlight of Kona’s underwater world. If you want to snorkel with sea turtles in Kona, here’s what you need to know for the best chance to see them up close.

Best Time of Year for Snorkeling in Kona

If you’re wondering the best season to visit Kona, you’re in luck. One of the best things about our region is that you can snorkel all year long. Kona’s unique geography and sheltered leeward coast provide protection from harsh winds and create calm ocean conditions throughout much of the year. However, each season brings its own unique vibe and weather patterns. But don’t worry! When you join us on a Kona snorkeling tour, you’ll get quality gear, comfortable wetsuits, and expert guides to make sure you have a great experience, whatever time you choose to visit.

Summer (May-October)

Summer is often seen as the best time for snorkeling. The water is warm and super comfortable, around 80°F, and the ocean is very calm. This helps our snorkel tours be especially well-suited for families and beginners. Plus, these smooth conditions make it easy to spot Honu resting on the coral or coming up for air on Kealakekua Bay snorkel tours and kid-friendly snorkel adventures.

Winter (November – April)

Even though winter is considered the rainy season, the Big Island’s western side stays much drier than the east. While the water cools slightly to about 74-76°F, we offer quality wetsuits for your ultimate comfort. As an added bonus, winter snorkeling in Kona is not only a great way to see sea turtles, but you may also spot some whales! From December to April, Humpback whales migrate to the waters around Kona, dramatically increasing your chances of seeing them from the boat.

Best Time of Day for Snorkeling with Sea Turtles Kona

You may be wondering, can you see sea turtles all day? Yes! The honu don’t stick to a strict schedule, but they do have some daily routines. If you want a better chance of seeing them up close, the time of day you choose for your tour is important.

  • Morning Tours: Early mornings usually offer the best visibility. The winds are calm, and the waters are clear, making it a great time to swim with sea turtles feeding on seagrass and algae near the reefs.
  • Afternoon Tours: As the day gets warmer, sea turtles often move closer to shore to bask on the sand or rest in the coral. Our afternoon snorkel tours are a great option for families and couples seeking a later start, plus, about 8 out of every 10 tours have a sea turtle encounter!
  • Evening and Late Night: As the sun sets, you might be able to spot some sea turtles swimming to shore to rest for the night. It’s also the best time for Manta Ray Night Snorkeling

More About the Honu: Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle

The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle is an absolutely fascinating animal. These turtles are mostly herbivores, spending their days eating algae, seagrass, and invertebrates that grow and live among the coral reefs. They are gentle and slow-moving, often gliding gracefully through the water.

  • Cultural Significance: In Hawaiian culture, the Honu stands for good luck, long life, and guidance. Many families see the Honu as an ‘aumakua, or ancestral guardian spirit.
  • Status: While their numbers have increased thanks to conservation efforts, they are still a protected species. Honu are currently listed as “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. That’s why it’s extra important to work with an experienced snorkel tour company that follows all local regulations to protect their habitat.
  • Best Spots: The best way to find sea turtles is with an experienced guide. We’ll take you to Kona’s top snorkel spots, like the colorful reefs of Captain Cook (Kealakekua Bay).
