What Makes Night Diving in Kona, Hawaii So Special?

You might be wondering why Hawaii is such a hotspot for snorkeling and night diving, especially around Kona. That’s because Hawaii is located right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, making it a prime habitat for dozens of unique marine species. In fact, approximately 25% of aquatic animals found on the islands are endemic, meaning they exist nowhere else on earth. Plus, Kona’s calm and warm waters are ideal for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, and especially night diving tours.

Amazing Wildlife You Can See While SCUBA Diving in Kona at Night

When you dive deep into the dark and quiet waters on a Kona nighttime SCUBA diving tour, you enter a world of discovery and wonder. Descend into the blackwater 2 to 3 miles off the coastline and search for amazing wildlife lurking beneath the water’s surface! Underneath the waves, enter a world that seems straight out of a science fiction movie, as you encounter glowing phytoplankton, graceful jellyfish, intelligent squids and octopi, and more. Here’s more information about the animals you might discover on your nighttime SCUBA tour in Kona, HI:

Paper Nautilus Argonauts

One of the unique creatures you may encounter on your Kona Pelagic Blackwater Dive is the Paper Nautilus, also commonly known as the Argonaut. This animal is a species of pelagic octopus, known for its beautiful and delicate, paper-like eggcase that it forms around its body. This formation looks somewhat like a seashell, giving the octopus an ethereal and otherworldly appearance. Paper Nautilus are rarely found during the day, making a deep water night dive one of the best ways to see them in the wild. It’s truly a surreal experience and a bucket-list sight for passionate divers.

Siphonophores

Imagine swimming in the pitch-black water, the only light coming from your headlamp, and you spot a long, winding, and bioluminescent creature gliding past you… No, it isn’t an alien! It’s a siphonophore! The strangest part? Siphonophores aren’t actually just one animal. There are many zooids, genetically identical but specialized individuals, that move together as part of a colony. They are related to jellyfish and can stretch over 40 feet in length! Take a Kona Blackwater Dive for a chance to see these rare animals for yourself.

Octopus and Squid

Pelagic SCUBA diving in Kona is also a great way to get up close and personal with the region’s many octopus and squid species! Keep your eyes peeled for the Day Octopus and the Hawaiian Bobtail Squid as they hunt in the dark. A truly special experience on our night dives, sometimes baby squid demonstrate their curiosity and incredible intelligence by swimming straight up to divers, tentacles extended. Spotting one of these amazing animals in their natural habitat is truly an experience like no other.
